Communicating science
Making science accessible to broad audiences is critical for so many reasons - sharing discoveries, informing policy decisions, transparency in policy decisions, building public trust, strengthening our relationship with the natural world, educating people about our greatest challenges and solutions, and fostering a collaborative culture, just to name a few. When science is shared, our whole world benefits.
Podcasts and radio shows have been a wonderful way to share our latest scientific research findings with community and industry audiences who have a vested interest in the health of our marine resources for future generations.
News interviews and articles have helped us reach broader public audiences across several recent marine research projects. I believe that sharing scientific findings beyond peer-reviewed journals is a critical part of making science accessible to all.
I am interested in sharing and communicating science with video production. I provided science content for two episodes of Inside Sportfishing, and I advised a SIO graduate student project entitled, 'Enhancing the Wild.' A more recent effort, entitled 'Out in the Wild,' was funded by National Geographic - coming out soon!
As a lifelong recreational angler myself, continuing to engage fishing communities has always been a core part of my work. I maintain regular involvement in industry trade shows, seminars, club presentations, vessel crew trainings, stakeholder meetings, science advisory panels, management working groups, etc.
Teaching
One of my favorite parts of my work is teaching and elevating the next generation of scientists. My grandfather and father were both university professors, and my mother taught grade school, so teaching feels natural and fun to me. I was a teaching assistant for several classes at multiple universities and have given many guest lectures at several institutions.
Advising and mentoring
Working with graduate and undergraduate students on their specific thesis projects is another favorite aspect of my work! I have advised, mentored, and/or served as committee member/chair for several next generation scientists, including high school students, undergraduates, master's students, PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers. Teaching is always a learning experience!
